I drink entirely too much good beer
I'm just a nerd living in the Pacific Northwest who loves good beer. This site is a collection of my thoughts on craft brews as well as guest columns from friends around the world. Feel free to drop me a line at bobwoodshed[at]gmail[dot]com or leave a comment. Enjoy!

Seasonal blurbs

December 18th, 2006

Once again I have gone quite some time without updating, however I do have some quick thoughts on a few brews I’ve tried recently.

Rogue’s Santa’s Private Reserve
Love hops? Love Santa? You’ll love this beer. This is by far the hoppiest seasonal I have tried, yet very delicious. This is how we celebrate beer in the Pacific Northwest. Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle.

Bridgeport’s Ebenezer
To be completely honest I hated the first half of the first 12oz bottle I tried. I can’t even really explain it, but the beer just tasted nasty. It’s supposed to be a winter warmer style ale, but Deschutes’ Jubelale is leaps and bounds better than this stuff. I guess I would only recommend giving this a shot if you don’t like Jubelale, yet still want to give the winter warmer style a shot.

Rock Bottom’s Porter
I had a pint of this at the Rock Bottom in downtown Portland. I believe the name was Willamette Porter or something like that, but the bottom line is it was a decent porter and not much else. By no means was it bad, but even more readily-available porters such as Black Butte Porter are much better. I wouldn’t turn it down, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get a pint.

Rogue’s Uberfest Pilsner
I love Rogue, but I hated this Pilsner. I generally hate pilsners, but somewhere in the back of my mind I thought Rogue could change my mind. Unfortunately, I was wrong. My first reaction after holding my pilsner glass to my nose was, “oh my god, this reeks.” I managed to get past the smell and taste the stuff. Once again I was disappointed. I choked the whole thing down, but I wasn’t happy. Go ahead and try the stuff out if you want to just say you tried it, but otherwise you can save yourself a few bucks and just grab a High Life.

That’s all I got for now. Stay tuned soon for better, more full write ups of a couple more seasonals I’ve got laying around
